“Reports of My Death Are Greatly Exaggerated”: The Surprising Staying Power of HCL Domino

Many of you probably still remember IBM Notes and Domino? The death of this 30+-year-old system has been predicted for at least the last 10 years.

In reality, moving away from it is surprisingly difficult. Truly replacing options don’t really exist. Under its current owner, HCL, Domino has been actively developed in a modern direction – bringing in features like low-code development, modern APIs, and new AI capabilities for workflow automation.

Recently, for instance, we implemented a fresh REST API update for a customer, enabling them to build an efficient front-end while still leveraging Domino’s versatile backend features.

Here at Newelo, we have long-standing Domino expertise that remains in steady demand. We’ve been involved in several lengthy decommissioning projects where the question eventually comes up: is the change really worth all the costs? Should we have checked out Domino’s new features and the benefits of upgrading after all?

Decommissioning used to be the politically easiest choice for organizations, but in today’s changed global climate, HCL Domino surprisingly offers less dependence on pervasive American technology.
